How do you feel about the NAIS? How big of an impact do you think NAIS will have on breeders?
Do you think the extra costs associated with keeping cattle under the NAIS is worth it, considering that your entire herd could be wiped out by the USDA because animals were found with a disease 2 miles down the road?
I heard that should a disease strike & entire herds were wiped out, only market value would be paid to the farmer. This scares me. What do you all think? Is it worth it?

Hello RareBreedFarmer, welcome to the forum!

My own personal feeling about the NAIS, civil liberties issues aside, is that it will prove to be the last straw for many struggling small farmers who are already pushed to the limit trying to survive.

I'm tending to agree with you. I have other rare breeds, and am considering a cow to add to my collection here in CT. I was looking at the beautiful Randall Cattle. Their markings are georgeous! I like to have eye catching animals, in addition to healthy animals.

I've been wanting to expand my collections for my "hobby". This NAIS thing has put a stop to all of my plans. I don't know if I'm going to keep ANY of my animals if this goes through. The risks seem kinda high, even though I've tested all my animals for major diseases-there are still risks. These rarebreeds are definately not cheap, especially when you strive for the best bloodlines you can find. Added expenses for something like the NAIS which won't serve a real purpose to protect the food chain is a real turn off.

You know, been listening to all this talk about id tags & wondering what the fear is... Can't really see it though, understand the cost side of it, to me it adds more legitimacy on where that animal originates from on top of the breed registry. Am waiting on the boarder issue to be resolved next month, and am looking at a few animals from Quebec, will be registered, inspected by Federal & provincail Vet doctors, & coming with their Id Tags as well, no doubt after all this bse nonsense this be part of new requirements to import animals, to me its says you now know everything about that animals past...so whats to fear..Go up to the Royal & ask questions to those showing cattle & see what beniftes they have with their system we'll have to have somthing comprable for the basis of trade. True the cost is at issue, should be underwritten as a public health issue no doubt. should be able to trace slaughtered meat from the animal to the store shelf from the farms involved in raising that animal, sort of like your cars Vin Number, no questions then....
